Meet Sumir Patel, M.D.
Dr. Patel moved to Arizona in 2004 to join Mesa GI after finishing his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
Born in India, the boy who would become Dr. Patel moved to the USA at the age of 13 and grew up in Ogden, Utah, where he attended high school. He attended University of Utah and majored in Biology and completed his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Physiology at the University of Toledo.
Dr. Patel is married, has a daughter and a son. He loves to travel with his family. One of his passions is food. He loves to try different cuisines when traveling. He is an advanced skier and an avid golfer with a single digit handicap.
Why Gastroenterology?
Dr. Patel’s decision to specialize in gastroenterology was primarily inspired by his mentor in Internal Medicine residency, who was a brilliant and dedicated gastroenterologist. In hindsight, he credits it as the best decision of his professional life because his work has given him the opportunity to make a positive impact on his patients’ lives. It has also allowed him to build long-term physician-patient relationships which have grown to include patients’ children, grandchildren, and family members.
What Should Patients Expect?
More than 20 years of clinical experience has enabled Dr. Patel to have a deeper understanding of digestive disorders. This allows him to provide his patients with a detail oriented and comprehensive approach to their care. He understands the importance of improving digestive health and the positive impact it can have on patients’ lives.
