What is a Biologic-Medication Infusion?

Biologic infusions are a cornerstone treatment for moderate to severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. These medications, typically monoclonal antibodies, target specific components of the immune system to reduce inflammation and prevent flare-ups. Common biologics used include anti-TNF agents like infliximab, anti-integrin agents such as vedolizumab, and IL-12/23 inhibitors like ustekinumab.

Administered intravenously in a clinical setting at regular intervals, biologic infusions can induce and maintain remission, improve quality of life, and reduce the need for corticosteroids or surgery. Close monitoring is essential, as these therapies may increase the risk of infections and other side effects.

How Does a Biologic Infusion Work?

Biologic infusions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) work by calming down the body’s immune system, which is overactive in conditions like Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. In people with IBD, the immune system mistakenly attacks the digestive tract, causing inflammation, pain, and other symptoms.

Biologics are special medicines given through an IV that help block the signals in the body that cause this inflammation. Different types of biologics target different parts of the immune system, but they all work to reduce flare-ups, heal the gut, and help people feel better and stay in remission.

They’re usually given in a clinic like Mesa GI every few weeks, and patients are closely monitored to make sure the medicine is working and not causing side effects. These drugs are administered through a needle placed in a vein (intravenous infusion) in your arm. Only a qualified healthcare provider such as the staff at Mesa GI should prepare the medication and give it to you.
