Integrative Gastroenterology at Mesa GI
What is Integrative Gastroenterology?
Integrative gastroenterology blends the best of conventional Western medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies to support healing, restore balance, and promote long-term digestive wellness.
This approach considers the whole person – body, mind, nutrition, and environment – to help restore digestive balance, and draws on current medical research along with holistic practices to enhance outcomes and improve overall quality of life.
Elements of Integrative GI Care
Mind-Body Connection
The digestive system is deeply interconnected with the nervous system through what is known as the gut-brain axis – a bi-directional communication system linking the brain and the gastrointestinal tract. Emotional stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation can all impact digestive function. Mind-body practices such as mindfulness, breathwork, meditation, and gut-directed therapies may help calm this axis, reduce symptom flare-ups, and support overall balance.
Nutrition & Lifestyle
Food plays a central role in gut health. Personalized dietary recommendations support a balanced microbiome, reduce inflammation, and enhance digestion. Approaches may include the Mediterranean diet, Low FODMAP diet, high fiber diet, or targeted elimination plans, depending on individual needs.
Complementary Treatment Options
Treatment may include a range of complementary therapies, such as:
Herbal medicine and natural supplements.
Therapeutic probiotics.
Acupuncture, therapeutic bodywork, or energy healing.
Stress-reduction practices including mindfulness, meditation, or vagus nerve reset practices.
Gut-healing nutrients and lifestyle adjustments.
